Kingston, Jamaica - Friday, October 20, 2023 - The Women Resources and Outreach Centre (WROC), a pioneer in empowering women and girls and eliminating violence and discrimination, has officially launched its UN Women Spotlight Initiative Project, "Empowering Communities to Reduce Gender-Based Violence Among Women and Girls in Inner City." The launch event, held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 19 Rousseau Rd, Kingston, marks a crucial milestone in the fight against gender-based violence in Jamaica.

Established in 1983, WROC is a dedicated advocate for women and girls, committed to fostering safe environments free from violence and discrimination. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive issue in Jamaica, with high incidence rates and many unreported cases due to stigma and fear. It disproportionately affects the youth, resulting in significant social and economic consequences.

WROC's Spotlight Initiative Project aims to reduce violence against women and girls (VAWG). As part of the Spotlight Initiative Project, WROC is registering the Women Empowerment Group as a community-based organization, enhancing the capacity of 10 women to address GBV and raising awareness about GBV among 150 community residents through radio programs and a GBV Health and Information Fair.

Keisha Williams, Executive Director of WROC, emphasized the project's significance, stating, "This initiative represents a turning point in our ongoing battle against gender-based violence, with the ultimate goal of creating a safer environment for women and girls."

The launch event received support from the Leader of the Opposition, community leaders, schools, and various social groups, all demonstrating strong backing for this vital initiative.
